This is not a research paper but a way for you to consider, organize and discuss aspects of Contemporary Art drawing from lectures, discussions, presentations, readings and analysis of specific works of art. Do not use the same artist in more than one essay.
A. Write a 2 page (no less than 400 words, double-spaced, Times Roman12pt) essay on one of the following topics. Include at least 4 artists and 4 specific artworks in your essay. This is not a research paper but a way for you to consider, organize and discuss aspects of Contemporary Art drawing from lectures, discussions, presentations, readings and analysis of specific works of art. (35% of final exam)
1. Discuss the ways in which contemporary art addresses questions of identity. In your discussion, consider this question, “Does the viewer require a narrative to fully experience the artwork or is the content accessible without additional information or text?”
2. In discussions of Post-Modernism, art is often perceived as process, performance, production and a recycling of culture authenticated by audience. Discuss any or all of these characteristics as seen in the practice of art after the 1960s.
B. Write a 1 page (no less than 100 words, double-spaced, Times Roman12pt) essay on one of the following topics. Include at least 3 artists and 3 specific artworks in your essay. (15% of final exam)
1. Discuss the Pluralistic decade of the 1970s. What tendencies and/or movements emerged? Describe at least three of the movements discussing specific artists and works.
2. Discuss the movement of Neo-Expressionism, citing at least three artists who are labeled as Neo-Expressionists. What similarities and differences exist among the artists who are labeled Neo-Expressionists?
