Overview
In this unit, you will examine the role of research in nursing, starting with the history of nursing research and investigate the different methods of gathering data. You will also explore methods for integrating evidence-based nursing into clinical and managerial practice.
What is nursing research?
What do we mean by nursing research? Nursing research involves making systematic inquiries that validate and refine existing knowledge or generate new knowledge in the field of nursing. This knowledge may then be applied in clinical practice. Knowledge of current research helps generate the guidelines for nursing practice (Polit & Beck, 2004). The goal of nursing research is to provide evidence based care that promotes quality outcomes for the health care system. Melnyk and Fineout-Overholt (2005, p.9) suggest five steps of evidence-based practice:
Ask the burning question
Collect the most relevant and best-practice
Critically appraise the evidence
Integrate all evidence with one’s clinical expertise, patient preferences, and values in making a practice decision or change
Evaluate the practice decision or change
Let us first take a look at the evolution of nursing research:
Early Research
Nurse’s participation in research has changed over the past 150 years. Nursing research started as far back as the 19th century, with Florence Nightingale. Her initial research focused on the importance of a healthy environment, concentrating on the benefits of clean air, ventilation, and clean water. She also collected and analyzed data pertaining to soldier morbidity and mortality during the Crimean war. Her research led to many changes in the field of health care (Polit & Beck, 2004).
Nursing research 1900–1970s
In 1900, the American Journal of Nursing was first published and case studies began to appear in this journal. During this time in history, clinical research began to expand. The American Nurses Association conducted research that provided information for the basis of nursing practice standards. The Nursing Research Journal was published in 1952. In the 1950s and 60s, nursing schools began introducing research in their baccalaureate programs. In the late 60s and 70s, the development of models, conceptual frameworks, and theories began to emerge (Polit & Beck, 2004).
Nursing Research 1980-1990s
By 1980, clinical journals began publishing nursing research articles. As a result, in the 1980’s nursing research experienced an increase in funding. During this time, The National Institute for Nursing Research was formed (Polit & Beck, 2004).
Nursing research in the 21st Century
The goal of nursing research in the 21st Century is to continue to gain scientific knowledge for nurses to implement evidence based practice. Nurses of the 21st Century are responsible to create and to promote a research culture, which will include educational programs for all levels of nursing, necessary funding for research, and a sound research foundation (Polit & Beck, 2004).
