FORMAT INSTRUCTIONS
The research must be computer-processed (approximately 1” all around), double-spaced, and grammatically correct. Also, the individual section of the policy paper must consist of a minimum of 5 scholarly sources (articles and books) and a minimum of 5 pages of text, not including the title page, bibliography, appendices, or illustrations. Five points will be deducted for each page short of the 5 page minimum. Scholarly articles are those listed in the Social Science Index, Criminal Justice
Periodical Index, Criminal Justice Abstracts, and Sociological Abstracts. Popular magazines such as Time,Newsweek, or Corrections Today as well as many internet sites are not scholarly journals. Materials from web sites must receive approval from the Instructor to ensure that they are scholarly. Plagiarism will not be tolerated and may result in failure of the course. The research paper should follow APA format when citing materials and developing the reference list or bibliography. Research papers, which fail to meet APA requirements, will automatically lose 20 points from the final score. Headings[each section labeled] should be used to provide organization to the research paper. Research papers that fail to use proper headings will automatically lose 15 points from the final score. Late research papers will be penalized 20 points for each day the research paper is late. Late research papers will not be accepted after the 5th day, unless approval is obtained from the Instructor.
RESEARCH PAPER – INSTRUCTIONS
The paper will consist of four sections. Each section should be labeled accordingly.
Section One
This section provides a through overview of the topic area you selected to study and write about. In this section you should clearly state the topic/focused problem and then provide a succinct discussion of the topic you are writing about to include historical information and why this particular area is important. In this section, using supporting documentation from your research,class readings, class discussion, and video presentations, discuss the nature and extent (statistical data– if this information is available) of the topic you are writing about. 80 points
Section Two
This section of the paper discusses the problems and/or challenges [dilemmas/issues] this topic
presents to society, documenting the problems/challenges as well as social consequences from multiple viewpoints. Also discuss any unresolved issues, and what will happen if the issues and challenges are not addressed. Afterwards, discuss why focusing on this topic is important. For all of the areas covered in this section, make sure you use supporting documentation from class discussion, readings, video presentations, and your research to substantiate the information and data presented in this section. 60 points
Section Three
This section of the paper describes the methodology used to develop the paper and critically assesses the topic you are studying by relating it to your research, class readings, discussions, films, and/or media coverage. Make sure you use supporting documentation from class discussion, readings, films, and your research to substantiate the details presented in this section. 30 points
Section Four
This section of the paper provides a conclusion and inference about the future direction of the topic you wrote about. This section of the paper concludes with an insightful reflection about what was learnt from conducting this research assignment to include a discussion on how your perspective (attitude or belief system) either stayed the same or changed as a result of writing about this topic.Explain your response, using specific examples from your research paper, lecture notes, class readings, other readings, and/or video presentations. 30 points
