Psychology Movie Review: Movie: 28 Days
The movie is about a character, Gwen Cummings, a party girl who is an alcoholic. Cummings gets drunk in her sisters wedding and due to the effects of alcohol after becoming drunk, she destroys her sister wedding cake. In an attempt to replace the cake that she has destroyed, she borrows the limo to get another cake. She starts driving while she is drunk. Additionally, she is talking with the phone while she is driving in a hurry trying to replace the cake. However, due to her being drunk and being destructed by the phone, she haves an accident. When she is taken to court, she is given an option of either going to jail or twenty-eight days in a rehabilitation centre. She chooses the rehabilitation centre where at first, she resistance but later after reviewing her life, she gives it a chance (Celia, & Betty, 2000).
The character in the film, Cummings, is abusing alcohol as her choice of drug. This means that she an alcoholic. Alcohol belongs to the class A of drugs. This is because alcohol is a chronic disease that affects many people. According to the ratings of alcohol as compared to the other types of drug, alcohol is ranked fifth thus making it to be a class A. This is because the drugs that are highly rated are ranked in the class A. Additionally, those people that are affected by alcohol the end up becoming destroying their lives. Therefore, alcohol is rated as class A of the different drugs of alcohol that are their (Coates, 2011).
The typical effects of the class that alcohol belong to are very many and common. One of the effects of this class is amnesia. This usually happens when the person abusing the drug, after excessive intake he or she begins to have memory lapses. This effect is called amnesia. Another effect of the drug is the health implications. There are many chronic diseases that are associated with the drugs of class A where cancer is one of them. There is the cancer of the stomach where the different, which is commonly caused by these different drugs another effect of the class drugs, is the tendency of becoming criminals. Most of the times, the people who end up engaging in these drugs, they end up becoming criminals so that they can fulfill their addiction. Family break ups is another effect. This is where these people start loosing the trust of their family members and the money that is usually spent on food and other needs ends up being wasted to the drugs.
In the film, there are instances in which it is evident that Cummings is an alcoholic. For instance, when Cummings destroys her sister’s wedding cake due to alcohol and yet she does not see it as a big deal. Additionally, the point of driving while she is drunk is another indicator that she was an alcoholic. Moreover, the point of committing an accident due to taking is an indicator that Cummings is an alcoholic. This is also because a person cannot drink too much and drive at the same time. With all this indicators it is true to say that, the she was an alcoholic. However, based on the above information Cummings crossed the line from recreation drugs to Drug abuse when she destroyed an accident and was involved in an accident with the limo that she was using to get a replacement cake.
At first, Cummings did not have the desire to stop using the drug. This is because she was always resistance to perform the stipulated activities in the rehabilitation centre. However, this did not continue for a very long time. After the revaluation of her life, Cummings became interested to stop abusing alcohol as she started getting involved in the different activities that were there in the rehabilitation centre. What actually hinders her ability to stop abusing alcohol is the resistance that she has towards being an alcohol. Additionally, the love that Cummings ha for her boyfriend was strong thus becoming a hindrance to the treatment that she was acquiring in the rehabilitation centre.
After Cummings agreed to stop taking the different drugs, other people were hindering her process of rehabilitating. For instance, her longtime boy friend was one of the people who were hindering with her recovery due to the relationship that she had with her boyfriend. Additionally, there was another girl that Cummings befriended in the rehabilitation and she was hindering with her rehabilitation because she was helping her to acquire the alcohol. One of the characters who were supportive about her quitting alcohol was the counselor Cornell. Despite the fact that Cummings was resistant and she saw it as a waste of time counselor Cornell never gave up on her. He persistently continued to encourage how until she eventually agreed to try to quit taking alcohol. The support was very effective because if the counselor never supported her most likely she could have never been able to stopped resisting the rehabilitation treatment.
One of the treatments that were used to help Cummings stop drinking alcohol in the rehabilitation centre was counseling or therapy. In the centre, one of the program that was there was group therapy which was used as treatment for patients. In this kind of treatment, the addicts who have accepted and are willing to stop drinking alcohol come together and share there problems and experiences with one another with guidance from a professional counselor (National Institute of Drug Abuse, 2011). Therefore, Cummings had to attend a group therapy session where everybody is expected to tell their stories about their addictions and their experiences.
According to the different researches that have been done by the doctors the method is very effective and is commonly used in very many treatment centres. This is because many people have the ability to open up and express what they feel (Hockenbury, 2010). These shows the different patients that they are not alone there are other people who are suffering the same addiction and there are possible solutions that have worked with the different addicts thus motivating the addict (Drug Rehabs, 2008). This method was very realistic in the movie because it has been used and tested in real life and it was working. Additionally, it does not work to everyone. Similarly in the movie there were also other people who it did not work for them same as real life.
