Quantative Data Analysis

Assignment 1

Study Details
46 students at a university took part in the study. Participants were asked to complete an online survey about their facebook use. There were 3 questionnaires within the survey, measuring their levels of facebook use (facebook intensity), their perceived bonding and bridging social capital. Scores for each of these scales are calculated by calculating a mean score for each scale (i.e. scores on the items in the scale divided by number of items in the scale). The items in each of the scale and the columns to which they refer in the data are included in the Assessment 1 folder.

Analysis Task
Your task is to analyse the data (data_assessment1.csv) in R to research the following two hypotheses:

H1: Intensity of Facebook use is statistically significantly associated with peoples perceived bonding social capital

H2: Intensity of Facebook use is statistically significantly associated with peoples perceived bridging social capital

This analysis should include you conducting appropriate data cleaning and reverse scoring of the items, desrptive statistics, graph generation and inferential statistical analysis.

Analysis Hints
Id22 does not use Facebook. Should you remove this row?

bonding_3 and bonding_9 are not the same polarity as the other items. We need to reverse those scores e.g. make a score of 5 into 1; 4 into 2 etc. You can do this with a simple calculation

Making scores for each of the questionnaire scales can be done by creating a mean of the scores from the relevant columns for each participant

What needs to be handed in
You need to hand in one pdf or .docx document that includes:

1) A Results and Discussion section for the analysis. The Results section should focus on the desrptive statistics and reporting the findings to APA conventions. The discussion should focus on summarising the results, highlighting the limitations and generating ideas for possible future work (these may come from extra reading around the topic) (max 1000 words). Students should familiarise themselves with Results and Discussion sections in research papers as a guide as well as looking at Lecture 2.

2) Your R srpt. This should include comments explaining the code at each stage.
