You will be required to write five (5) short reaction papers (300-500 words, about 1-2 pages) on required readings. The instructor will assign each student due dates for his/her reaction papers. A schedule will be posted to Niihka under the “Readings” tab at the beginning of Week 2. Reaction papers should be formal, scholarly essays 300-500 words in length. They must present a thesis supported by evidence, quoted and cited. They should be organized and free of awkward sentences and grammatical errors. Reaction papers are due at the beginning of class on your assigned days. Bring a hard copy to class for the professor, and submit the essay via Niihka by class time. I will not accept late reaction papers. These essays usually work best when you compare evidence from multiple documents to arrive at a greater understanding of the past. You need not reference every assigned document, but you must use at least two. Use simple parenthetical citations featuring the author’s name and the appropriate page number like so: (Frethorne, 38). Format as follows: 12 pt Times New Roman, one inch margins all around, double space, no bibliography required, write your name and final word count at the top of the page on the right side.
