Each student is required to read the book titled “A colossal failure of common sense: The inside story of the collapse of Lehman Brothers” and write a report of it. The paper must be typed, 5-6 pages (title page and reference list not count), double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font, and the American Psychological Association (APA) format. While APA style is required for referencing, you are NOT required to use running heads or to attach an abstract for written assignments.
McDonald & Robinson (2010) described varied plots of “white collar deviance,” which were not crimes (at least according to laws at that time) but had no differences from gambling in their book. Those plots include (but not limit to) Credit Default Swap (CDS), Credit Derivatives (in many forms such as RMSB, CDO, and CLO), Shadow Banks, and Qualified Special Purpose Entities. In your paper, you are NOT expected to summarize the whole book but MUST directly address following three questions in details:
Q1. Identify one (and only one) plot of white collar deviance being described in the book. According to your text from Chapters 3 to 7, what type of white collar crime is it? Why? How?
Q2. According to your text Chapter 8, how could this type of white collar crime be explained?
Q3. How could this type of white collar crime be prevented at first?
Use the third-person point of view to approach your writing. In third-person writing, people and characters are referred to as “he,” “she,” “it,” and “they”; “I” and “we” are never used (unless in a direct quote). The use of third-person point of view is common in the field of criminal justice, because it makes the essay with more factual and professional tone.
