• (2) Second writing assignment — “Scholarly Report”
• 5 pages, double spaced.
Use any standard format for your bibliography, and in-line citations as follows: (Author Date: Page#).
• Choose: ancient Indian (a) “myth”, (b) “ritual”, or (c) “epic” [including (d) “the Bhagavad Gita”] and read 5 recent scholarly articles.
• Answer the question, “What are scholars currently working on in the field of ancient Indian [myth/ritual/epic]?”
• That is, what kinds of topics are we investigating? What is being debated? What are the different positions?
• (Similar to what we had discussed regarding the “Aryan” question in the field of Indian pre-history)
• You don’t have to produce an argument on the topic, but rather report on the state of the field to a fellow member of our class.
• This will function as a substitute for the essay portion of the final exam.
I would like the paper to have 5 RECENT scholarly articles for this paper. The myths, rituals, or epic has to be from the Vishnu/Shiva myths, the Mahabharata, or the the Bhagavad Gita. Rituals need to be within those, if chosen rituals. Rituals or myths would be preferred but whichever ones are OK, whether the myths or rituals or the epics.
I have attached 2 lecture slides from my class that could be of help with this paper.
Research Report: To appreciate how and why international scholars study ancient Indian myth, ritual, or epic, students will be asked to choose one of these topics (ancient Indian “myth”, “ritual”, or “epic”), and, based on at least five recently published articles, report on at least one academic debate that is currently taking place within this field.
