Whichever of the prompts you choose (or should you choose to develop your own, in consultation with me), your paper will need to
demonstrate that you understand the essay you have chosen,
provide your reader with a clear understanding of the relevant key terms and positions held by the author of the essay to which you are responding,
analyze specific, relevant examples (from your reading and/or your own experience), and
make a further argument which goes beyond Miller, Appiah, or Butler argues (in other words, your paper should not simply restate all or part of your source’s essay).
