Skills: By completing this assignment, you will practice the following skills that are essential to your success in this course as well as in the field of child development: understanding basic methodology used in the field applying basic disciplinary tools in a real-world context Knowledge: This assignment will also help you to become familiar with the following important content knowledge in this discipline: elements of appropriate language/conversations with young children conventions of speech sample collection (MLO 15.1) conventions of speech transcription (MLO 15.2) Task: In this assignment you will need to: Select an English-learning child (bilingual child is okay too as long as English is one of their languages) between 18 months and 4-1/2 years old (or a 5- year-old who has not yet entered kindergarten) Thoroughly read the document “Collection of Language Samples – Instructions” before recording the child Record a speech sample from the child using a phone, tape recorder, or video camera (about 30-45 minutes) For a speech sample to be representative it must contain at least 50 utterances (an utterance is a complete thought, sentence, or response) Thoroughly read the document “Guidelines for Transcribing Speech Samples” Transcribe the speech sample following the conventions specified in the guidelines If the child has produced fewer than 50 utterances, you will need to record more of the child’s speech until 50 utterances are transcribed. If the child has produced more than 50 utterances, you may stop transcribing after utt. 50 Write 2 paragraphs, one giving information about the child (their age in months, gender, birth order, SES, and other biographical information) and the other about how the data was collected.
