Leadership Skills Paper

Students will develop and submit a paper that describes their preparation in 10 critical skills impacting leadership effectiveness. These skills are discussed on page 453-454 in the Manning & Curtis text (see parenthetical notes below), and have been studied extensively for their relationship to contemporary leadership.

This is a pre-course assignment, in that students will be conveying what they understand about these areas prior to participating in the course readings and activities. During Week 7, students will submit a Personal Analysis of Leadership Paper that will close the loop and examine what they have learned about effective leadership after participating in the course readings and activities.

The 10 critical skills include (chapters where these skills are discussed are shown in parentheses):

Cognitive Ability/Intelligence (2,3,6,7)
Strategic Thinking (3-7,16-20)
Analytical Skills (3,10,11,18-19)
Decision Making (1,9,10,11,18)
Communication Skills (7,8,10,12,13,15,16)
Team Leadership (7-13,19)
Managing Diversity (10,13,15)
Delegation Skills (14-16,18)
Coaching Ability (1,2,3,6,8,9,10,11,12,14-19)
Learning Skills (6,7,12,16-20)
For each of the 10 critical skills areas, students should evaluate their:
Observation (how might they observe these skills in other leaders?)
Development (what steps, if any, have they taken in developing the skills?)
Effectiveness (how effective are they currently exhibiting the skills in leadership, based on a 5-point scale, where 1 = very ineffective, and 5 = very effective)
Each skill should be discussed in light of these three criteria, with approximately one paragraph per skill. The Leadership Skills Paper is due by the end of Day 7, during Week 1.
