Homework 3 — Linguistic Landscape Photograph & Analysis Activity

Take a picture of the Linguistic Landscape of Long Island or NYC in which Spanish is present and analyze it with respect to its content and function. Here are the instructions:
1. Take a picture of a commercial sign, government signs, street signs, advertising, storefronts, graffiti, posted notices, etc., in which Spanish is used.

Important: The example showed in class-included restaurants. Therefore, don’t use restaurant fronts or restaurant signs in this assignment. Be creative.
2. Write down an essay in which you analyze the picture and its geographical, linguistic and social context focusing on the Linguistic Landscape issues. Your analysis may include the following topics (not necessarily in this order):
2.1.Examine the surroundings: Where is the sign/graffiti/notice located? Outdoors or indoors? Is it big? What does the neighborhood look like? Is it is a Latino community? How visible is the sign/graffiti/notice? What kind of street or avenue can it be found on? Etc. In general, pay attention to anything in the public space that may be relevant for this assignment. Ask the neighbors if necessary
2.2.Examine the design of the sign/graffiti/notice: What is it about? Is it visually attractive? What layout does it have? Are there any images? Are all the components relevant? Is the font type used relevant? Does it remind you of any other sign/graffiti/notice? Is it fit for its purpose? Etc. In general, pay attention to anything in the graphics and message that may be relevant for this assignment.
Important: Organize your essay as you wish. Be exhaustive yet concise. Use quotations and prepare a list of references if you consult any source for your essay.
