Identify two teams or task groups within an organisation of your choice, one of which is a formal team of long-term duration engaged in core business of the organisation and the other is informal, short-term and not related to core business.

Compare and contrast their external responsibilities (reporting structure, business role, communications etc.) to the wider business and how the performance of each team is measured in the wider business context.

 In each case, identify suitable approaches whereby a manager could set and monitor targets against these performance measures.

From the work of Belbin, Tuckman and any other useful sources, analyse the internal roles within each of these teams which enable them to function effectively.

From your analysis of the internal management of the two teams above, contrast how an effective manager could motivate each team to improve the achievement of its external measures of success.

Identify the reasons for appraising the performance of each of the teams and compare and contrast the approaches which might be employed. Supply additional information from your own experience of team performance reviews.

For a manager required to appraise the performance of each of the two teams, identify the criteria and measures of success to be employed in the appraisal and design appropriate documentation to conduct, record and monitor the appraisal.

 

Appraise the performance of your own work teams against the criteria of your designed form in relation to the performance of a specific activity. Use your evaluation to recommend changes to the documentation or process which would improve motivation and change behaviour specific to your team.
