Case Vignette:

Scott, age 37, was referred to you by the pastor of his church who requests that you submit a status report to her after three sessions. He presents as reluctant and uncomfortable. He shares that he feels challenged in his marriage, but very much enjoys his relationship with his two daughters ages three and five.

Scott has recently disclosed to his wife that he has secretly been attending a weekly group therapy meeting for married men who are sexually attracted to other men. He shares with you that Adam, the leader of the group, and a licensed MFT, has pressured me into having sex with him. Scott reports feeling conflicted about this, but states that Adam has told him that the two of them having sex is part of the therapy. Scott wants to stop having sex with Adam, but is unsure about how to do that, since he wants to stay in the group, and wants Adam to like him. He states that he is just not sure what to do about this situation, or what options he has in dealing with Adam.

Scott tells you that he is a High School math teacher and he sometimes struggles because he is attracted to some of the older boys in his classes. He states that sometimes the temptation to touch them is overwhelming. He reports that every day hes distracted by these thoughts and impulses and nothing is making it go away. He is very reluctant to share more information with you than this about his work, and cries while discussing it.

He tells you that his wife is hopeful that you might convince him to participate in conversion therapy in order to overcome his attraction to other men, and return to the strict moral expectations of the religion that she considers a high priority for her family. Scott reports that he feels so conflicted and distressed by his growing attraction to other males that hes willing to try almost anything. He asks you if you can cure him of these desires and help him to be straight again.

Scott reports feeling severely depressed and isolated. He reports that he just wants to be normal and needs help to stop feeling the way he does. He feels overwhelmed and is uncertain that there is any way out of this situation. He states that he simply cant go on like this. He wonders if his family and children are better off without him. He is very agitated and tearful while talking to you and out of the blue states that I have a gun, you know.
