Dissertation Assignment Brief

Course Work 1: The Dissertation – Write an extended literature review on an aspect of clinical practice which it relevant to you, include recommendations for best practice and how these may be adopted.

In order to pass you must demonstrate that you have met all 5 learning outcomes of the module:

1. Demonstrate the ability to appraise and critique published research.

2. Critically evaluate strategies for the collection and analysis of literature in the preparation of a literature review proposal.

3. Demonstrate critical and analytical skills in a carefully designed, logically developed review of the relevant literature.

4. Demonstrate a questioning and analytical approach to practice and critically evaluate an aspect of care where evidence needs to be addressed.

5. Demonstrate, through the critical evaluation and analysis of the literature, the ability to develop evidence-based recommendations to enhance the delivery of care.

Word limit: 8000 words

Suggested Framework for the Project

The following sections must be included in the review. The recommended word limits are included as a guide and to help in planning the write up of your project. The limits do not have to be strictly adhered to.

Abstract (150 words)

Write a short summary about the key issues in the dissertation.

Introduction (150 words)

This should take a sweeping look at the key issues and their sequence as they are addressed in your review.

A proposal including the focus question and rationale (1200 words)

You should provide a rationale for the chosen focus of the review, highlighting the professional, clinical and conceptual relevance of your review question. This section should clearly articulate the aspect of practice that will be the centre of the project and how the literature review will contribute to its evaluation. Your rationale should make reference to current policies related to evidence based practice and the role of critical systematic reviews in that process. You may wish to use a tool to help you develop your question e.g. PICO, PEO etc

Methodology (1500 words)3

This is a critical evaluation of the process you took to the collection and analysis of evidence which underpins the identified aspect of practice.

You MUST provide a critical account and audit trail of the process you undertook; this means your supervisor should be able to replicate your search strategy.

This section should include:

• Discussion of the strengths and limitations of data bases used

• Discussion of the issues that influenced the depth and breadth of the literature coverage (Key search terms, inclusion/exclusion criteria, Boolean searches, grey literature, snowballing, EBP and the hierarchy of evidence)

• Discussion of sources of potential bias

• How the relevance of the material was determined

• How material was analysed; which tool was used and why (CASP etc) and conclusions drawn (the analysis should be presented in a table in the appendix)

Presentation of the Literature Review and findings (3500 words)

This part of the project will need to be divided into chapters and each chapter should relate to a theme which emerged from the analysis. The number of chapters required will be determined by the findings/themes coming out of the review. Subheadings may be used. This is a critical discussion of all the material analysed, demonstrating your synthesis of what you have learned from the range of sources; do not just describe the works, they must be merged and the findings and research styles critiqued.

Discuss any implications and provide recommendations for practice (1,000 words)

Within this discussion you should discuss how successfully you have addressed your review question; the significance of your findings so as to promote evidence based clinical practice. You should include a critical discussion of the recommendations for future best practice arising out of the findings of the review.

Remember You must answer you question

Conclusions (500 words)4

End your project by looking back over the methodology used and arguments you have developed, summarising the main points of your analysis. You should consider both strengths and weaknesses of your project.

Coherence of the Project

Your project should read as one coherent piece of work. Therefore, the chapters should be logically ordered with a link given to conclude one chapter and to lead into the next. The reader needs to be guided through the review, with clear ‘signposts’ throughout. You should aim to summarise the issues and show a good understanding of how all the issues raised in the review are related to the identified aspect of practice.

Appendices

Only use appendices if they are relevant to the review. Check with your supervisor if in any doubt. The appendices are not included in the word count. Similarly, tables used within the text (e.g. inclusion/exclusion tables) are not included in the word count.

References

These need to be presented using the Harvard system, as for all assignments. Your 6-10 final articles will be summarised/critiqued in tabulated form to ensure that the process of review of the literature is transparent.
