The Dreams in The Witch House

On your assignment sheet, I described your individual essay this way:
“Your individual paper should look at the strengths of this particular writer and show how they appear in this particular short story. You may either focus on one particular technique or show how the writer uses three different skills to enhance the effect of the story on the reader. Overall, you’re trying to show us how the story works and how the writer goes about creating the haunting at the center.
Stipulations: your paper has to cite at least three sources plus your primary source, have a strong argument, and follow MLA format throughout. “

So let’s start by unpacking that. A successful individual essay for this project will do the following things:
• Focus specifically on one story
• Use the resources you gathered for the group project to help interpret that story
• Have a strong argument that focuses either on how your author uses one particular technique here or shows how three different techniques are used in this story.
• Have a strong thesis, clear topic sentences, and succinct summing up sentences.
• Follow MLA format throughout
• Cite at least three sources, including your story, which is your primary source

Your individual essay is meant to be read AFTER we’ve already taken in the group project. This means we should already know a lot about your author and his or her interests and style. The individual essay should NOT repeat what the group project has already done. It’s meant to go a level deeper. So don’t rehash your content from the group project—the group task was to describe your author as a ghost story writer as a whole; now you need to come up with an argument about this specific story.
If the group project is meant to tease us into reading your author, the individual essay is for people who have already started reading more. I’m going to be looking for individual essays that break new ground and, particularly, apply the info you found out for the group project to your specific story.
