Hourly working conditions at GM and Wal-Mart show a lot of contrasts. GM’s hourly workers are better paid while those working for Wal-Mart are less paid per hour. Another key contrast is that is at GM, workers get more overtime opportunities compared to those working at Wal-Mart (Clark et al, 2002). Further, hourly workers at GM have a non-deductible health insurance while those of latter have deductible health insurance.
Additionally, workers at GM have the advantage of two paid breaks of thirty minutes and a paid thirty minutes lunch break. On the contrary, Wal-Mart workers get two fifteen minutes break every working day, The wage structures at GM are based on the skill level of the workers. For instance, skilled workers such as electricians and toolmakers receive some extra amount of wage per hour compared to other non-skilled workers (Clark et al, 2002). Further, the wage structure at Walmart is based on the rank of the worker. Those of higher ranks, such as managers, have increased working hours, and thus, higher wages (Basker, 2007).
