Theme: A person’s past transgressions will haunt his future.

Explore a theme in two works by two different writers (see item 1). The emphasis of this paper is to compare and contrast how authors use certain literary tools to portray a similar theme.

Readings: “Babylon Revisited” by F. Scott Fitzgerald and A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams

2. Choose from the literary devices below and show how the authors used those devices to bring this theme to their works. Please note that your paper will only include a selection of the devices below.

Literary Devices: Point of view, characters, setting, structure, tone, style, symbolism, diction, imagery, metaphorical language, sound elements, and form

3. Each paragraph of your paper should analyze a specific device and compare how each author uses this device to forward the theme. Please note that some papers may need to have more one paragraph comparing a single device.

4. The introduction and conclusion should both include your thesis statement and major points from the paper itself.

5. Papers must include close analysis of the texts and should include quotations from both works.

6. This paper should be at least four pages in length (not including the works cited page), formatted accordingly to MLA standards, and should include parenthetical citations and a works cited page.
