Term Project
The term project for the class is one that you get to choose. The only constraint is that it has to have natural disasters as a theme.
So choose a topic of interest to you.
It can be a topic that shares something in common with your major or intended major.
It can be a small (maximum of 3 people) group project. Because group projects involve more than one person, they have to be significantly larger in scope. An individual project worth an A will not receive an A for a group project. And be careful about who you agree with to do a group project – be sure they are reliable and will share the workload. Each person in a group will receive the same grade.
We encourage you to be imaginative in coming up with your topic.
However, DO NOT produce:
Board or video games – good looking games are not necessarily good games.
PowerPoint presentations – we don’t want a list of facts.
General research papers – if you write a paper, make it specific and focused.
We encourage:
Case studies – analysis of a particular topic.
Use your talents in other fields; if you’re a writer think about short stories, screen plays, etc.
Education majors: consider lesson plans and implementation. (e.g. an in-class exercise that discusses what causes flooding). Make sure your plan reflects a scientific reality. A good example is the Hurricane Smith exercise we did.
Business majors: the vulnerability of specific industries to natural disasters (but do not rehash your Katrina assignment).
Videos: provided they have information content, are focused and well executed.
