Transcription/Description of Indonesion-Accented English

Using sound file provided, writer should begin by completing a narrow transcription of all utterances (spoken by foreign-accented person). In your transcription, pay close attention to vowel and consonant quality. Use off-glide symbols for vowels and diacritics for consonants, if necessary. Also pay special attention to suprasegmental information. Your transcription must include a GLOSS of what was said.

A 4 page paper (typed, double-spaced) must cover the following:

Background info about the native language(s) involved: Please provide some basic information (from at least one source in our library) concerning the sound system of this person’s native language. Focus on how certain sound properties may cause interference in English. Where, when, and how did this person learn English? How do these details show up in your speaker’s accent?

Specific examples of how your transcription illustrates GAE or non-GAE properties.

Which sounds or classes of sounds are similar to those of GAE, and which differ? Are there regularities in these sound differences (i.e., can you represent them with phonological rules)? If sound substitutions take place, where do they occur – e.g. syllable initial, word final, in all environments? Please describe the speaker’s sound system as well as you can, including formal rules when possible. Remember to use IPA whenever possible (don’t spell!).
