Personal Responsibility
Under what conditions do individuals accept personal responsibility for their actions? You will want to take into account the thought of Stoic and existentialist philosophers represented in the unit readings.
Is willingness to take personal responsibility associated with the degree of self-respect each individual exhibits? That is, does poor self-esteem lead people to avoid taking responsibility, and is willingness to accept it a sign of healthy self-respect?
As we think through these issues together, it may be helpful to keep in mind the discussion in Unit 6 as well. The larger issue at stake has to do with the possible connection between self-interest and morality. To what extent is morality a purely private concern?
