UNDERSTANDING AND EVALUATING THE ARTS
Introduction
There are various kinds of artwork that people use to send messages to their audience. Artwork may refer to a kind of a visual art or a concept. All these kinds of art are used to express or send out a certain meaning or message to the audience. Visuals are good in any kind of art as they help to communicate an idea in a graphic manner. They also enhance easier understanding of the message. On the other hand, conceptual arts helps to create a certain illusion or concept in the minds of a person hence aids in bringing out some insights to a certain piece of work.
In the first image (Black goldfish) and the second one (will come to take sadness away), the designers have incorporated different visual elements to bring out an atmosphere of sadness (Designzzz, 2012). The designers used a combination of different visual elements including lines, shape, color, form or volume, value/tone and texture to portray the artworks. The subject matter that the art captures or portrays is on sadness and emptiness. The pictures carry a message of despair and dissolution.
The images are three-dimensional pieces of work art. The designers have used easily available material. The images are drawn on a piece of paper on which various colors have been used to bring out the images of a dog and a young girl (Designzzz, 2012). The images shows real image of real objects. Therefore, both visual elements and subject matters have been used in a combination to create relationships or rather themes, feelings and meanings of what is happening.
Various techniques and processes have also been used in the images. For instance, repetition has been used in the images to get the attention of the viewer or the users. Furthermore, repetition has also been used in the two images to arouse interest and create a certain emotion. In the first image, the artist repeated his images especially in his color choices. This repetition helps to attract attention to the viewer (Artwork, 2012). For instance, the use of yellow color and black has often been repeated in the images to attract the attention of the readers and to a tone on the subject matter.
In the first image, the colors used include, black, white, orange, and yellow. The yellow and orange colors have been used on the dog to portray the reality of the image. Most dogs in reality are orange colored. A background of grayish is also used in the image to help bring out contrasts and clarity of the image. In the second image, various colors have also been used to bring out the ideas and the message. The colors used include, pink, green, black, red and grey. These colors help the artists in bringing out message of hope in the children. The scene looks sad but there is optimism that things are going to be good. For instance, the heart symbol is included in the image and this shows love and hope.
In any piece of art, lines, space, texture, vale, color and balance are key in sending or conveying a message to the third party (Notes for artwork critique form, 2012). The two images used by the artists have incorporated all this characteristics in conveying their messages. For instance, lines have been used to create the outline of the image. The shape of the images has helped to bring the thoughts of the artists on a piece of paper for other people to comprehend. In general, lines, texture, shape, color and balance are used either separate or together to create a certain relationship, contrasts, feelings, emotions, transition among other values or attributes.
The two works are therefore representational in the sense that they convey a direct message. The works represent some thoughts that an audience gets from viewing the images. Even though the content is not much, the subject matter provided helps in deconstructing the meaning that the artists represented through their images. The first image sends out a message of sadness and imagination. The dog is angry and therefore imagines on how it can get some fish or rather food to feed on. The second image carries the artist’s message of optimism that the adversaries of the young girl will soon vanish.
To some extent, symbolism has been used. In the first image, the fish represents food that the dog imagines. It shows that the dog is angry. On the second image, the heart symbol shows love and therefore regardless of the problems facing the girl, there is hope.
The context of the artwork is formed from the point of view of dissolutions and lack of hope. Therefore, the artwork function is to show that indeed people or even animals go through some difficulties and imaginations in their mind. The traditional role the artwork presents is that it helps in enhancing creativity and conveying a message to the audience through images that an individual interprets him/herself.
