What are the basic characteristics that distinguish the earliest forms of Christianity, Protestant Christianity, and Roman Catholicism from one another.

What are the basic characteristics that distinguish the earliest forms of Christianity (you can just focus on the Pauline communities unless you really want to dazzle me with gnosticism and other interesting groups), Protestant Christianity, and Roman Catholicism from one another. Focus on these areas: the afterlife, communion, sin, religious images, and church hierarchy? Do their differences outweigh their similarities, or do the essential principles that they share unite these traditions as legitimate expressions of Christianity? Yes this is a big question 🙂
