American Immigration History (2015)
Paper 2: Undocumented Immigration
4-6 pages, double -spaced

Write a paper that answers the following questions. Your paper should have a clear introduction, a thesis, paper body, and a conclusion. It should answer all parts of the question and use specific examples and quotes from the readings to support your argument. You can excerpt small sections (no more than three lines), quote, or paraphrase from the book. Include parenthetical citations (Grande, 5) when you employ any of these three methods.

Topic: The “distance between us” is the title of Reyna Grande’s memoir of her childhood in Mexico and her adolescence in the United States. The title can take on many different meanings. In this paper, first explain how and why undocumented immigration has grown since 1965 (the newly added Johnson article will be helpful here). Then choose one of the following topics and answer the related questions. Draw from Grande and other readings in class and/or the campus visit by Jose Antonio Vargas.

The “distance between us” can refer to both the physical and emotional distance between family members torn apart by immigration.

1) How does immigration take a toll on families? How does the title refer to Grande’s family relationships when Reyna was in the Mexico and after she moved to the U.S.?
2) What are the challenges faced by immigrant parents in the U.S. and their children left behind? How did Reyna adapt and/or what were the scars left behind in the wake of these challenges?

The “distance between us” can refer to the separation that immigrants feel from non-immigrants in the United States.
1) What are the challenges faced by non-English speakers in the United States and for children for whom English is a second language. How do the different members of the Grande family adapt to this challenge?
2) How did the Grande family’s undocumented status affect their lives and abilities in the U.S.? What changed for them?

An “A” paper… demonstrates a thoughtful understanding of the readings and key themes; thoroughly addresses the questions asked. You have a strongly articulated thesis supported by examples and details drawn from the readings. Your paper is clear and well organized, with proper citations. It is probably the maximum length for the assignment, and perhaps even longer. Paragraphs connect and there are solid transitions. Your ideas are original. There are very few sentence level errors.

A “B” paper…is solidly written, covers the readings and key issues, and is well organized. It meets the page requirements. The thesis is well formed but may not be fully supported by details and/or examples. Or the thesis may not be fully developed. The paper draws from relevant materials, but the connections to the thesis and/or to the questions asked are not always clear. Ideas may not always be fully developed; statements not fully analyzed. Not all key aspects and themes addressed thoroughly. Your paragraphs connect. There are some sentence level errors, but not many.

A “C” paper…partially fulfills the requirement but doesn’t have much depth and looks like it hasn’t been revised much. This paper lacks a fully formed thesis. Ideas are not developed or analyzed. Paper tends to summarize rather than analyze; it does not thoroughly address the questions asked. The paper rambles, isn’t well organized, and doesn’t draw carefully on readings. Or the readings don’t fully support argument or questions asked. The paper barely meets page requirements. There are many sentence level errors, grammatical mistakes, and awkward sentence construction.

A “D” paper…is too short and lacks any depth. It is missing a thesis. It has numerous errors and is a response to the assignment that but does not draw directly on readings. It is disorganized and hasn’t been revised at all.————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————I want you to write each second topics (“What are the challenges faced by immigrant parents in the U.S. and their children left behind? How did Reyna adapt and/or what were the scars left behind in the wake of these challenges?” and “How did the Grande family’s undocumented status affect their lives and abilities in the U.S.? What changed for them”
