write a Historiography Paper, Unlike a typical research paper, this is designed to help you understand the process whereby historians use primary sources to develop theses and derive often very different conclusions about the past. You will have to read and analyze at least two books and one JSTOR article(each written by a different historian). You must also, in addition, read one historiographical essay relating to one of these topics. Your final paper will require you to address the following questions:
1. What do the historians believe they are adding to this debate? Meaning, why do they feel that they need to write a new history? What do they feel has not been done by previous works.
2. What are the historians’ theses—meaning, what are they arguing regarding the question?
3. What primary source evidence did the historians use, and how were they used?
4. In what social, cultural, or intellectual context did the historian write? (i.e., what may have influenced the historian).
Please use "Structure and Agency in the Holocaust: Daniel J. Goldhagen and His Critics" by A.D Moses as the historiography
and "Was it The Nazis’ Original Plan?" by Yehuda Bauer as one of the sources (in addition to others)
The final paper should consist of a summation of the historiography, analysis of the respective theses held by different historians, an evaluation of the sources and arguments of those historians, and ultimately, a conclusion as to which thesis is most convincing. Due May 18
The prospective structure for your paper should be as follows:
Introduction—1/3 page
Topic Summary 2/3 page
Historian Debate 1 page (information derived from historiography article and introductions)
Discussion of the three sources 3-4 pages, in the following format:
–Context (relevant information about the time period in which the historian wrote
–Contribution made by the historian to the debate over the historical question
–Interpretation (meaning how did the historian interpret the information and what conclusions did he or she arrive at?
–Sources and their use (what sources did the historian use to arrive at his or her conclusions?)
Your analysis as to which thesis is most convincing. Please note, your conclusion must be based on the evidence presented, and not on such personal matters as “I like Israel more.”
Conclusion—1/2 a page
