What if an artist intentionally chooses imagery and symbols that we find “offensive”?Explain.

There are some great points in your post here(see attachment). You are quite right that artists are supposed to help us reflect sometimes back on ourselves. We should be “different” or “made better” by what an art piece can stir in us. However, it is also not always that easy.

What if an artist intentionally chooses imagery and symbols that we find “offensive”? When that has occurred in our own country, there have been Senate “hearings” and inevitably funding to the arts is cut more.

If you find a visual or performing art “offensive”, how will you be able to be supportive of the artist’s right to be expressive? What aspects of “art” need to be in place for you to make the call if it should be supported by public money?
