In this units Assignment, you will write a persuasive thesis statement related to an argument for change and evaluate the effectiveness of that argument using the Toulmin Model. You will write three well-developed paragraphs addressing the following:
Part I: First of all, you will revise the provisional thesis statement (LISTED BELOW) that you generated in the previous unit Discussion. Make sure the thesis is concise (12 sentences) and clearly expresses a persuasive argument related to your topic. Then, identify what type of claim your thesis expresses (policy, value, cause, etc.) and discuss why you think this thesis will be an effective one.
This proposal will seek to investigate the effect of income inequality as a social determinant, specifically on educational success and employment, social mobility, and health outcomes. This proposal will seek to answer the following research questions.
1. What is the impact of income inequality on the way parents in society prepare their children for success in school and subsequently in the labor market?
2. What is the impact of income inequality on occupational structure in society and downward or upward social mobility?
3. Do societies with higher levels of income inequality have poorer overall health outcomes?
The thesis statement for this research proposal is that income inequality has a negative effect on educational and employment outcomes, social mobility, and overall health outcomes; specifically for people with low income levels (Corak, 2013). The thesis proposal claim represents is argumentative in nature, and will seek to show how this assertion about income inequality as a social determinant is correct. To do this, the proposal seeks to present supporting arguments and counter-arguments for this assertion, with the objective of showing that the supporting arguments outweigh the counter-arguments. This argument will use the three appeals of logos, pathos, and ethos. My ethos will be based on work in charities catering for poor people in society, as well as work with the rich people who donate to these charities. The pathos appeal will come from the stories that I have collected from poor people living in society, and the problems they go through in the healthcare, education, and labor system. Finally, the logos appeal will be from statistics and evidence from government agencies and research literature.

Part II: Next, describe how you will use the appeals of logos, ethos, and pathos to make your argument more compelling to your audience.
Part III: Finally, evaluate your argument based on the Toulmin Model. Describe the warrant (assumption), note possible challenges you might face in supporting this argument and what rebuttals will be needed, and determine whether the argument is susceptible to any logical fallacies and whether qualifiers would help to avoid those fallacies. You can review the Writing Center resource on creating a logical argument here:
