Essay I
Choose two of the following questions. Please review the guidelines for writing a history paper that I provide under testing. Each essay is to be no more than 1000 words for a total of 2000 words for both essays. You might opt to write less than 1000 words. Please put the number of words at the end of each essay.
1. How are the methods of rule of the Ottoman sultans, Safavid shahs and the Mughal emperors similar and how are they different? Choose two challenges (frontiers, sovereignty, administration/bureaucracy, military) they had to face and analyze how they dealt with these challenges. You might want to focus in your analysis on specific rulers (Mehmet the Conquerer/Suleiman the Magnificent, Shah Ismail/Shah Abbas, Akbar/ Aurangzeb).
2. What legacies did the three different Empires draw on? How did they transform these legacies into more lasting imperial political formations?
3. How and why did the Ottoman, Safavid and Mughal imperial forms of rule change and seventeenth and eighteenth centuries? How would you characterize these changes?
