“Analyzing Art and Literature in the Northern Renaissance”

• Examine two of the Northern Renaissance’s most masterful double portraits: Van Eyck’s Arnolfini and Holbein’s The Ambassadors. What similarities in style do you see? (Feel free to do a little extra research, if you choose –but supply us with your sources.)

• Next, select at least two (2) objects from each painting. What do they tell us about the lives of the people shown? Do they have any symbolic meaning?

• Pretend you are having a portrait done of you and a significant other; describe at least three (3) symbolic elements that you might include in the painting, and explain why.
