Essay prompt: Over the course of the semester we have covered some major trends in American literature, including realism, modernism and postwar literature. Write a 1,000-1,200 word paper in which you compare and contrast the literature from these three genres in terms of content and style. In other words, address not only the themes and subject matter covered by each genre of writing, but also the literary styles and devices employed. To back up your points, please refer to the actual writings we examined over the course of the semester. Also incorporate at least two outside resources, such as articles on realist or modernist literary technique, for example.
