Select a work of art (painting, sculpture, or photograph) from your textbook. Go to the website for the museum where your work is housed. You will find this information listed in the caption located adjacent to the reproduction of the artwork.
Go for an online “visit” to see the work you have chosen to write about. Pay attention to the ways that the work of art is displayed on the museum’s website. For example, is it featured by the museum on its site, or found in a listing of works from a particular period in the collections of that institution. Does the museum’s website include an informative essay about the specific artwork. If so, read the essay as the basis of your research for background information on the work, and biography on the artist. If not, you will have to conduct research to obtain this information. You may use your textbook, or online books, journals, or reputable art history websites – no Wikipedia, please!
Now you are ready to write the term paper. In your own words, write a 4 page 1000 words essay-format term paper explaining what you think are the significant issues and concerns that this work of art addressed in its own historical period. You are then to go on to identify four additional objects (can be fine art or items from popular culture) that you would display with your work in the museum’s online gallery. Explain how these new objects would help a contemporary audience better understand the significance and/or meaning of the artwork you have chosen.
Be sure to include a page referral to your artwork’s reproduction in the textbook in the body of your paper. In addition to the 4-6 pages of text, you must include images of the works that you are adding, as well as a mock-up site plan of your online exhibition. You must cite your sources throughout the text of your paper using MLA format. And, you must submit a Works’ Cited page listing those sources.
The Term Paper is worth 100 points of your semester grade. I expect college level writing in terms of organization and content. I will grade down for grammar and spelling errors.
