Write An Essay that Compares and Contrasts three Ancient accounts, from Mesopotamia (Enuma Elish) , Israel (Genesis) and Greece (Theogony)

In this class we have read three ancient accounts, from Mesopotamia (Enuma Elish) , Israel (Genesis) and Greece (Theogony), of how these cultures imagined the world was created. Your assignment is to write an essay that compares and contrasts these three accounts.
Your paper should be organized in the following manner. First, your essay should have a title. Then, begin with an introductory paragraph. This paragraph should state what the purpose of the essay is. For example, “In this essay I will describe, and explain……” You should also describe the organization of your essay to help prepare the reader on what to expect and in what order. For example, “I will first describe each account, then compare and contrast them.” Next, in the following paragraphs, give a detailed summary of each story, making sure you present the key points. Some such points would include: how was the world created, what was created, who did it, what was present at the very beginning of creation? It will prove helpful to quote short passages in your description to help make your point. Then, in the next section, show how the accounts resemble each other, in their organization, details and in general ideas. In the section after that, describe how the stories differ from one another in their organization, details and conceptually. Finish the essay with a short summary of what you accomplished. What does each account try to explain? Your own personal reaction to one or more of these stories will make the essay more readable. Your paper should be based primarily on the passages we have read (documents in UBLearns). You need not do any research on these stories, but if you want to include some background history to each story, that is okay. Having some historical background may help you in your comparisons. If you do use outside sources, be sure to cite them, (in an accompanying parenthesis) or with a footnote to your bibliography at the end. Failure to cite sources can be interpreted as plagiarism (see final sheet of your syllabus).
Grading. Your paper must be a minimum of four full pages, double-spaced, 12 point font, Times New Roman with one inch margins. Your grade for the paper will be determined by: a) how clear, complete and well organized it is (50%), and b) the quality of writing, grammar and spelling (50%). This is not a research paper: this is a university required writing exercise and content-related essay. You are expected to carefully proofread the writing of your essay before you submit it. Two suggestions that will definitely help your grade: 1) closely follow the instructions outlined in the paragraph above, and 2) edit the writing carefully. After you have edited the essay, have someone else read and re-edit your paper before you turn it in. If English is not your first language, please take a draft of your essay to the Writing Center in 209 Baldy Hall (645-2394): they will help you with the prose. Also, have a native speaker edit your prose.
