Double spaced, plus a bibliography. The project has two parts:
Part I
You should hand in a preliminary bibliography, consisting of at least 6-10 sources, alphabetized and cited using MLA format (Links to an external site.) (with one exception: use italics for titles rather than underline). Do not number the bibliography.

For example,
Lindberg, Carter. The European Reformations. Cambridge, MA: Blackwell
Publishing, 1996.
Attached to the bibliography should be a photocopy of the first page of each resource (title page for books, first page for articles).
Part II
You should only cite works that you consulted for the paper.
Direct quotations and other use of sources should be cited using. MLA format (Links to an external site.).
For example: “… black robes” (Dolan 40).
Any sources from the Internet should be consulted carefully- if you have doubts concerning a site’s academic integrity, be sure to check with me. Wikipedia should not be used as a source (though Wikipedia articles sometimes can lead you to academic sources through citations and bibliographies).
When researching resources, be sure to check the publication dates of any material that you use, particularly books and reference material, but also web based material. Evaluate resources critically: whose point of view is reflected by the work? Is it a devotional or apologetic, rather than an academic, source? Is the material in a secondary source outdated?
There are several dictionaries and encyclopedias in the Reference area that are related to American Protestantism that could help you get started, but your research should go well beyond those sources.

Term Paper Guidelines
Style hints:
1. Avoid using the first person except in the thesis statement or conclusions.
2. Avoid using one source for extended segments of the paper.
3. Avoid relying on the text book or other class readings. While you may refer to previously assigned material, remember that you are writing a research paper.
4. Avoid “extended” historical introductions (in particular, don’t give lengthy histories of the European origins of particular denominations).
5. Be sure to cite both direct quotations and paraphrased paragraphs using MLA format.
6. Papers should not be merely descriptive or an extended “encyclopedia” article. This can be avoided by taking a critical approach to a topic, including making comparisons, identifying influences, and/or tracing developments.
