Cultural appropriation is an important concept to consider. Please watch the video below highlighting the New Zealand All Blacks rugby team performing the traditional Maori haka. Interestingly, it’s performed by the entire team whether they are of Maori descent or not. It’s also become something of a national symbol for New Zealand—at least within the sporting world!
Discuss the concepts of cultural appropriation versus appreciation as related to the video and your own cultural symbols, traditions and artifacts. When does appreciation border into appropriation? How do power and history play a part in the difference between appropriation and appreciation?
