You are supposed to read the entire book, The Surplus American: How the 1% Is Making Us
Redundant, by Charles Derber and Yale Magrass. You summary/review should include the
followings:
1. A full citation (author, title, publisher, and place and date of printing).
2. A summary of major points, issues, or topics covered in each chapter in Part I.
3. A brief summary of the play in part II. What is the play about and what is intended to convey
to the reader/audience.
4. An overall analysis offering a concise statement on the author’s purpose, argument, and
claims. This segment is your evaluation of the book. Here, you test authors’ methodology,
theories, ideas, and delivery. You assess the strengths and weaknesses of the book.
How successful is the author in convincing or informing you? How is the quality of their
presentation and clarity of their thought? Did they facilitate your understanding of the subject or
possibly point the way to further enlightenment? Explain why or why not.
If appropriate, provide examples or offer alternative explanations, viewpoints, and
perspectives. While you should feel free, and encouraged, to criticize any of their claims and
methods, make sure that you back up your criticisms with logic, evidence, examples, etc. Simply
saying “I agree” or “disagree” does not add much to the quality of your analysis. You need to
explain why you agree or disagree and what alternative(s) you propose to their view or analysis.
With regard to the play in Part II, do you find the play effective in terms of authors’
objectives? How closely, or adequately, does the play relate to the realities of American social,
political, and economic structures? Whatever your responses, explain why.
5. If you need to quote any part, or sentences, of the book, provide the page number. If you are
critiquing a specific argument made in the book, even though paraphrasing, refer to the page
where such argument or point is made.
6. Finally, proofread your review thoroughly to correct spelling, typos, grammar, and other
errors.

7. What is Reaganomics and how has it contributed to the expansion of surplus people
and the gap between the rich and the poor?
8. What are the relationships between war, military growth, deindustrialization,
outsourcing, and low wages?
9. What solutions do authors offer for solving socio-economic ills of American
capitalism?
10. What is authors’ view of the Occupy Movement? Do you find their hope realistic?
