Identify and critically evaluate a particular aspect of youth gangs and/or group offending and should give consideration to policy and practice responses to it.

For this assignment, you are expected to produce an essay plan in preparation for your second assignment. Your essay plan should identify and critically evaluate a particular aspect of youth gangs and/or group offending and should give consideration to policy and practice responses to it.

Full instructions will be given in the seminars in the preceding weeks and instructions will be available on BREO.

Guidelines

You should read the following guidelines in conjunction with the table showing the learning outcomes and assessment criteria for this unit provided earlier in this handbook. In your weekly lectures and workshops/seminars we will explore various key aspects of youth gangs and group offending such as how gangs and why gangs form, their ethnic, gender and class composition, offending patterns and acts of deviance, and interventions to reduce gang and group offending. For this assignment, you should:

Choose a key aspect of group offending that interests you (for example, you may be interested in why young people join gangs or you may be interested in the roles of females within gangs)

Familiarise yourself with the literature around your chosen topic.

Identify relevant key policies and/or practice issues.

Begin to critically evaluate sources, key ideas and arguments and policy and practice responses.

Incorporate the above into a 500 word essay plan.

You will be expected to use a range of academic sources and only ONE of these may be an internet source. As with ALL your written assignments, you should reference your sources in the text and in a list of references, using the Harvard system of referencing. You will find the Harvard Guidelines and a quick referencing guide on BREO.

Your essay plan should be structured as a typical essay and should include key points for your introduction, the main body of argument/discussion, and conclusion. It should be titled and have a reference list this will not be part of your word count.
