One of the primary aims of participatory approaches [PA] in development is to empower communities and groups to undertake their own analysis of problems and issues in ways that reflect their own cultural context. However, over the years the idea of participatory development has come under constant criticism and analysis. There are tensions and contradictions in the theory and practice of the idea.
