Ambiguous Images

Ambiguous Images

Ambiguous images are optical illusionary images or pictures that have various properties in their visuals (Oracle think quest, 2013). They are ambiguous because they are contradictory. The images induce different but stable perceptions to the observers.  Because of the nature of the images, it requires an individual to be keen to be in a position to identify the hidden image or features in the image. For instance, one image maybe having two images at the same time and this becomes a little bit ambiguous when observed. To be able to understand the images it requires an individual to flip back and forth in the picture or to scrutinize the entire image. Therefore, the   images require use of an individual mental ability to better understand their meaning.

Middle vision is the stage that allows the visual processing and it combines all the basic features in a given scene to recognizable and distinct objects and in classifying the image. High-level vision comes before middle vision and helps the person to understand the scene while the after early vision is responsible for determining the various basic features of a given object. Consequently, these images require an individual to be very keen to capture the images. Various studies explain the conception of the concept of ambiguous images to have emerged from   cubes. Nevertheless, various artists have developed this concept by creating images that are ambiguous and require an individual to think and to visualize with a lot of keenness to get the hidden meaning of the images. Various ambiguous images representing objects and animals have been discussed herein.

A good example of an ambiguous image is that of a swan that faces left and a squirrel that faces on the right. It is not easy to first tell whether the image is that of a swan or a squirrel. The first time you observe the image your mind thinks that it is a swan alone but after scrutinizing it the image of a squirrel comes in ones mind. Therefore, this image is s a good illustration of an ambiguous image because it entails an individual thinking and creating an illusion of the image.

Another   image is a drawing that appears like a skull when observed from a distance but it is not a skull when it is obserbved keenly. It represents a naked women kneeling on her knees. This combination of a barely dressed woman is an illustration that depicts death. This combinations therefore also depicts an ambiguous image which is vey difficult to identify on first observation.

Another image is that which represent a staircase. The front of the staircase can be viewed in two ways through either direction by focusing on the colors red and the orange painted on the sides. When focusing on color red, the direction of the stairs becomes different from when the focus is on orange. This therefore is an ambiguous image because it represents two different perspectives. This concept helped and inspired Escher to come with the idea of concave and convex.

In the rotating mask illusion, the  mask rotates but because of the  facts that people mind does not accept or perceive  existence of  hollow  face hence they does not recognize or realize that it is hollow. Therefore, the illusions that is created in the image is a sign of ambiguity in the images

Vanity is another ambiguous image. In this image on first observation what comes in ones mind is a skull. But on closer look, it shows a woman looking in a mirror probably applying a makeup. This means that even though we want to be beautiful and to own material things, one thing is clear that at one point we are going to die. Therefore, this ambiguous image combines images to create or to convey a message to the viewers or observes.

Another good example of an ambiguous image is the “Eskimo Indian. This is a double image that shows the faces of an indene that is staring on the left and an Eskimo that is standing on his toes facing on the right. For an observer to identify this, it requires one to think and to look at the image keenly to unravel that they are indeed two people in the image.

Calvary is an image that shows the crucifixion of Jesus on cross but it also looks like the face of Jesus Christ. These two images are fused in a manner that it requires a person to visualize keenly to be in a position to spot that in the background it is the face of Jesus Christ.

‘Forever always’ is also an ambiguous image. The picture shows two old people facing each other. You get this immediate image when you observe the image. However when observed keenly, the heads of the two old men has other smaller pictures of themselves perhaps showing that they visualize their life. In the middle, a vase is present that  requires a person to observe the image with some keenness.

‘Gossip and Satan can be also’ image shows a face of devil. However, on observing the image keenly, a picture of two women gossiping is seen. The idea behind this is that when people are quarreling or engaging in bad things, the devil is the one that is taking their control.

In ‘another skull is that a human skull that has at the same time seven naked women’’, image, the  idea that comes in ones mind when observing the  image is  a scary skull but on  a keen observing you realize that it has a number of naked women combined to make it into the skull.
