•(2) How might a utilitarian use the distinction between act utilitarianism and rule utilitarianism to reply to your answers to the question (1)? Include a clear explanation for the difference between act utilitarianism and rule utilitarianism in your answer.
•(3) Analyze the following cases by considering: which one is an example of act utilitarian reasoning and which one rule utilitarian reasoning. Explain your answers.
◦[Case 1]: If engineer Jim Schmidt discloses the information regarding outside bidders to his manager, then he will be more likely to show favoritism elsewhere. No one would believe Jim to be fair or trust his judgment. So Jim should not disclose the information.
◦[Case 2]: If doctors generally lie to their patients about their diagnoses, then patients would lose trust in their doctors. Because that would bad, I should tell this patient the truth.
◦[Case 3]: If engineer Mary Andrews does not report the possibility of pollutant discharge to the EPA, then others will not either. If that happens, then the government wouldn’t know this case, which would be bad. Therefore, Mary Andrews should report this case to the EPA.
