Fight Club America (2014). “History of Boxing,” Retrieved on December 6, 2014 from http://fightclubamerica.com/about/history-of-boxing/
The main argument of the website is that boxing is an old sport that has developed over different ages to acquire different styles of fighting, rules, and ring-techniques. The website offers a comprehensive explanation of how the sport has developed at different stages. Fight Club America also explains how the game grew in popularity to become included as one of the games in the Olympics of 1904 (Fight Club America, 2014). The website explains the stages through which the sport developed. “There is clear evidence that boxing existed as early as 1500 BC,” (Fight Club America, 2014 p.1). The Crete Island is associated with the beginning of boxing. The development of Boxing, according to the source, slowed during the Common Era because of Christianity’s spread and the fall of the Roman Empire. However, “The first official bout was registered in London (1681).” From 1698, there were numerous boxing events that revived the game to its popularity.
The student considers the website as an important source that explains the historical development of boxing. The source is reliable because it is a website of an organization that is concerned with fight-games. The student shall rely on the source to trace how the sport developed from one stage to another, and how the rules and the strategies of fighting changed from one period of development to another.
Hunnicut, M. (March, 2005). “The Development of Boxing Strategies, Styles and Techniques during the Gloved Era to Present: Part 1,” Retrieved on December 6, 2014 from http://coxscorner.tripod.com/hunnicut1.html
The main argument that Hunnicut (2005) presents is that Boxing is a sport that has undergone tremendous revolution in its history: “Throughout the history of gloved boxing styles, techniques and strategies have changed to varying degrees.” However, the author portends that research in the sport of boxing is complex, and the reason that he gives is the complexity of the game itself. In boxing, according to the author, nobody is mentally, psychologically, and physiologically exact. The author discusses the issues that contribute to implicit research on the development of the sport. In addition, the author discusses some of the personalities that were influential in the development of boxing, including the people associated with different fighting techniques and rules of the ring. Terry McGovern is one of the personalities that the author discusses as influential in the development of the sport.
The student considers the source as one that is important in giving a historical account of how boxing has developed over time. However, the student shall also rely on the article to find information concerning the challenges on research about the sport’s development. It is the information that the researcher gives preference. The student shall also use the source to understand the personalities that have contributed to the sport’s development and the roles that they have played in the development.
International Boxing Association (N.d). “AIBA World Boxing Academy,” Retrieved on December 6, 2014 from http://www.aiba.org/default.aspx?pId=3090
Concern is growing about how boxing shall develop into the next generation. Unlike the previous sources, the website is about the future development of boxing. The main argument in the source is that AIBA is an international organization that is committed towards improving boxing in the future generations. The organization has developed an international academy for training boxers. It the first of its kind and it is based in Kazakhstan. The project was completed in 2013, and it is “an integrated institute that embraces all aspects of the development of boxing as a sport.” The academy offers world-class facilities for training athletes in boxing, and national member federations can join the academy for the benefit of their athletes.
The website is a reliable source of information for the student. It is a publication of an international organization in the sport of boxing. Furthermore, the website explains the development of boxing in the modern day, showing the current efforts to improve the sport and the athletes. It offers clear explanations of the facilities and programs that the center offers for the athletes.
Ballybough Community Center (N.d). “The Irish Boxing Association, Boxing Development Officer,” Retrieved on December 6, 2014 from http://ballyboughcommunitycentre.ie/?page_id=192
The source explains the importance of boxing and the need to develop the sporting activity. The author takes different perspectives about the sport’s benefits, analyzing its importance to an individual, the community, and its benefits to education. The argument is that boxing should be inculcated as a sport in the education system as a way of encouraging its development. The aim of the community is to promote boxing so that it becomes recognized community activity. The community center also encourages athletes to participate in boxing. One of the issues that have undermined the development of boxing is the fear factor about the sport being a violent activity. However, the sport has its rules which are taught like in any other sport.
The student shall depend on the source for information regarding the roles that boxing plays in the society and the strategies for encouraging the development of the sporting activity. The challenges that boxing faces in the modern and how the community center deals with them will give important insights into how the world can develop the sport.
