Business and Biblical Application
Part 1
Choosing the succeeding president in such a big company as Grandview is quite a daunting task. It needs to be done through a proper process using the right channels. The committee chosen by Al and Morris is part of the right process. This is because such a decision cannot be made by Al and Morris alone and neither can it be made by the members of the family. However, the people constituting the committee are of concern. First, the committee should have as very few family members as possible. This will give room for the making of an objective decision (Poza, 2007). Apart from committee members being from outside the family, the people in the committee should not have any relations with the family. For example, they should not be friends with the family members. This will allow the committee members to make decisions based on the facts without upsetting any family members or breaking any friendships.
The present constituent of the committee members is not right. This is because it constitutes of either family members or friends to the family members. For example, the committee’s chairperson Peter is a great friend of Al. This might hinder him from making an objective decision without upsetting his friend or either of the family members. As evident, he had already started getting letters from Sarah, persuading him to consider other family members who were not part of the company. This turn of events calls for a change in the committee.
Although Al and Morris are part of the company, they should not be included in the decision-making and neither should they be included in the committee. This is because they both have personal interests in the whole issue. Each of them has a son whom they want to be the president of the company and so they might manipulate the decisions in favor of their interests.
The interim CEO plan does not make sense in the present situation. This is because the family members, those in the company and those outside the company, are not comfortable with this arrangement as they feel that Morris will only manipulate the decision-making process to favor his interests especially during that interim period. It is best that the succeeding president takes over as soon as Al retires/resigns. The interim plan will only worsen the already worsening situation. There are family members who are in support of Morris while others are not. However, everybody is in favor of a succeeding president. It will only be best if the committee comes up with the succeeding president before Al’s time is up so that the company, which includes the family members, does not have to suffer the shifting period. It will be worse if the company changes leadership to many times, i.e. from Al to Morris to the successor.
A company is an entity on its own. It is best that decisions pertaining to a company be made without the inclusion of other affairs, which are exterior to the company (Virginia CLE, 2011). It is good that both Joe and Bill have been part of the company for a long time. However, excluding other qualified members with the needed qualifications is not a wise decision for the business. Ed Chafee and other qualified people in the family should be given the opportunity and the consideration for the position. He also has the experience for running a business for he has run his own business.
Part 2
“The whole world can gossip about you and if you don’t take it personally, you are immune to the gossip.” This quotation shows the significance of being focused and not listening to what the other people have to say about you. In the story of Blind Bartimaeus found in the book of Mark 10:46-52, NIV, many people rebuked Batimaeus and asked him to keep quite when he called out the name of Jesus for healing. Instead of keeping quite, the Bible says that he shouted even more. Jesus finally heard and healed him.
This same quote can be applied in an experience that took place at some point in my life. I wanted a job and the only job available depended on ones looks. I did not think that my looks would qualify me for the position. It was administration assistant job at a modeling agency. Many of my friends felt that I did not have a chance getting the position and so they told me (and others) about all the flaws I had which would disqualify me from getting the job. However, I chose to ignore these reports and went ahead for the interview. The good news is that I got the position. My interviewers told me that I had qualified for the job because of my confidence, which seemed to flow from both within and without.
Since I want to be the president of a prominent company or have my own company in future. I choose to ignore the negative talk and the gossip that is brought by those who are mediocre-minded. I will not take any of these reports personally and I will pick what will propel me to my goals.
