Writing Assignment : The Position Paper
Description: you will compose a researched position paper using the format I have provided you in this assignment sheet. Your position paper should address an issue in one or more of South Park’s episodes or the film. Your objective will be to use the show as a springboard to talk about a controversial issue in American culture. You must select an issue that has contemporary relevance and that sparks a debate with at least two opposing viewpoints. Take a look at current events in the news (e.g., politics), and then conduct a Google search or browse an episode guide to see if South Park addresses the issue that interests you. I recommend picking an issue that you would like to research. . Consider what commentary the episode formulates on the issue. From there, you can either align yourself with the argument that South Park makes or oppose its argument, but you still need to write an original thesis statement that clearly states your main claim that you will seek to prove in your paper. To meet the objectives of this assignment, you must present both sides of an issue. Your paper must contain the elements of Toulmin’s model of argument, including a rebuttal section (see the Toulmin on the uploaded files ).
notes : you have already pick wrote the issue that you have talk about it in the proposal position” (censorship in music )
Purpose: The purpose of your position paper is to compose an argumentative research paper that includes a rebuttal (your opponents’ view). Essentially, you will advocate your own position and then explain your opponents’ position, ultimately saying how your position is stronger than the opposing position. With this assignment, you are doing what we have been practicing all semester: effective argumentation. This assignment is similar to your commentary in that you will make an argument about a cultural issue and argue your main point (your thesis); however, instead of merely expressing only your opinion, you will address the arguments on both sides of an issue. You must use secondary sources to present evidence and cite these sources in accordance with the 7th edition of MLA style.
Research: You must conduct research on your chosen issue so that you can fully understand the arguments that others make on your issue. You will use your sources to present evidence in support of your position and in opposition to your position. You must incorporate at least FIVE SECONDARY SOURCES into your position paper.
