Commercial Management Aspects.Discuss

As detailed in the Assignment Brief we want all students to cover some aspects of Management within this group design project. Commercial Management can be summarized as delivering the project on time and to budget. The purpose of this document is to clearly set out various management aspects. Each group member must choose a different aspect to cover. Should there be any disagreement then this matter must be reported to the staff team who will resolve the issues. As a general guide it is expected that this section would not exceed two pages of A4.

this topic has been chosen:
1.The Analysis and Management of risk.
This should relate to commercial/ business risk, not only to issues such as health and safety. The relevant risks should be identified and assessed in terms of likelihood of occurrence and severity. Actions to eliminate/reduce each identified risk should be devised wherever possible and the party best placed to bear the residual risk (in the context of achieving the most cost effective fit for purpose job) should be identified. For the guys tackling the geotechnical aspects please see the risk management section on pg742 of the ICE Geotechnical Manual.

this is the actual topic of the design project :
2.6 A5 to M1 link road.
Highways England have plans to provide a link between the M1 and the A5 that is critical to facilitate economic development and jobs growth in the Central Bedfordshire area. This section of the route often experiences traffic congestion. Other local routes also carry significant amounts of traffic and these include the A5120 passing through Houghton Regis and Toddington to Junction 12, and the A505 linking Dunstable and Luton town centres via Junction 11. The objectives of the scheme are listed on the link below and include:

unlock the development of 7,000 houses and 40 hectares of employment land potentially providing 4,000 jobs at Houghton Regis, whilst also improving safety on the existing A5 and local roads
reduce journey times and improve journey time reliability for long distance traffic
reduce traffic travelling to Junctions 11 and 12 from the local road network in Dunstable, Houghton Regis and surrounding areas
boost economic growth by investing in roads to relieve congestion and improve road safety

The goal here is to come up with your own link road solution along with the design of a modern distribution centre close to the link road, requiring structural and geotechnical design. In addition to the transportation issues, the route requires flood assessment and drainage design. All of the design issues should be carried out in such a way that they clearly demonstrate your commitment to sustainable infrastructure.
