Does Slavery Still Exist around the World? How About the US?
Slavery did not end with the abolition of slave trade in the 19th century. In the book World History: Patterns of Civilization, Burton Beers makes the point that slavery exists in the USA and the entire world. The vice exists in different forms. There are incidences of children who are forced give manual labor on the farms, women who are forced to work as prostitutes and people who work for salaries that are far below the amount of labor that they give. There are over 21 one million people in the world who work as slaves. There are also employers who threaten there employees physically and emotionally for them to work. The employers also restrict their employees from their freedom of movement and association.
The modern slavery exists in numerous forms that are complex. Many people are slaves to their employers yet they do not realize. In the USA, there are employees who tied to their employers and they are not free to move freely within the labor market. There are also cases of employers who assault their employees when they refuse to work.
The idea that emerges from Burton’s book is that modern slavery does not create a safe country. Slavery threatens the employees, and they cannot walk away freely from their employers for various reasons. First, the victims of modern slavery fear over their lives. Their employers have threatened and abused them, and such treatment raises fear. Human traffickers, who are some of the people responsible for modern slavery, also threaten to kill the family members of the slaves if they attempt to run away. Another challenge that derails the end of modern slavery is the sense of loyalty that the slaves develop towards their employers. They also have the sense of obligation to their families.
It is, therefore, true that slavery exists in the modern global society and in the USA. It exists in various forms like child labor, forced adult labor, and underpayment. Human trafficking and forced prostitution are other forms of modern slavery. There is the need to address the problem because it affects the lives of the victims and their families.
