I would first try to rationally explain what I want john to do. This uses rational discourse: part of Merizow’s Transformation Theory (of Merizow, 1990). It suggests that I can challenge the validity of its presuppositions and get him to assess the appropriateness of his behavior by engaging in a rational discourse. I would explain what I want him to do and the reasons why and rely on his rationality to have his behavior changed. Given his dementia, this will probably not work- so I will try something else
As a social worker, I would pay focus on John’s behavior, feeling and thinking with application of rational thinking. I would critically reassure John on the importance of interacting with other people while criticizing on his line of thinking. I would be positive while explaining the need to participate in the upcoming Bingo day. The use of rational discourse might not succeed in transforming the patient’s belief hence, I would not expect much from him.
Mezirow also focuses on Critical reflection: This is a process by which a person constructs new beliefs and thinking from the previous reasoning (Mezirow, 2003). The process would be very helpful in transforming John’s beliefs. I would emphasize on the need to focus on the importance of playing Bingo. Due to my concern, I am sure John would answer while looking for an excuse to excuse himself from participating. I would then appreciate him and announce that I have already booked him and other patients for participation.
Am sure at the beginning he would not like the idea and he would isolate himself from other participants while observing them. This is behavior might suggest his interest although, he is still shy. Through encouragement, john would slowly start to play Bingo. With time, he would not want to miss the game which would help him to make as many friends as possible. As sure this approach would be helpful to John.
