Educators are using technology to replace textbooks in the classroom. In 1998, the U.S. libraries first offered e-books to students and today have surpassed the hardcover book sales. Technology has continued to evolve, offering new opportunities for educators and students. As a pilot program, students were all given iPads to use to replace the textbooks during the school year. These iPads allows the classroom to extend beyond the four walls. The iPads are light weight and are much lighter than the textbooks. “School leaders say the iPads is not just a cool new toy but rather a powerful and versatile tool with a multitude of applications, including thousands with educational uses” (Hu, 2011).

The use of technology makes learning fun and easy. Studies have shown that students who own tablets read more books than those who read printed textbooks alone. The use of tablets allows teachers to customize learning for students rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. The use of tablets cuts down the need for paper, which in turn helps save the environment and saves money. The use of technology offers students who are more introverted to open up and connect more with the teachers and classmates. The use of technology will help to enrich the students learning experience.
