Among the plethora of courses I’ve completed during my academic journey, three stand out as having had the most profound impact on me, shaping my educational and professional trajectory. This reflection will delve into these courses and the competencies I have developed throughout my degree program, shedding light on the concepts and topics that have left a lasting imprint on my mind.
One of the most influential courses I undertook in my academic journey was “Criminal Law and Procedure.” This course offered a comprehensive exploration of the legal framework governing the criminal justice system. It delved into intricate topics such as the Fourth Amendment, which protects against unreasonable searches and seizures, and the Fifth Amendment, which safeguards against self-incrimination. This course illuminated the critical role of due process in criminal proceedings and underscored the fundamental principles upon which the justice system is built. In this needs assessment, we will explore two areas within the criminal justice field that demand significant attention and reform.
The first area that warrants our attention is the implementation of restorative justice. While restorative justice has gained recognition as an alternative approach to traditional punitive measures, its full implementation in the criminal justice system remains limited. Restorative justice seeks to repair harm caused by crime by involving all stakeholders—victims, offenders, and communities—in a process of reconciliation and restitution (Latimer & Dowden, 2020).
