Unit 2: Multiculturalism in Academia
Writing Topic: The Unites States has always consisted of diverse ethnic, cultural, and racial groups. With this diversity has often come tension and antagonism. In education, there is much debate regarding the inclusion of multiculturalism in the classroom. On one side, there are those that argue that multiculturalism is divisive. On the other side, there are those that believe that multiculturalism is important to the formation of ones personal identity.

1.Arizona Ruling Limits Ethnic Studies by Emily Deruy.
2.Demystifying Multiculturalism by Linda Chavez
3.The Whitewashing of Arizona by Eric Liu
Documentary: Precious Knowledge
Writing Task: Present both sides of the debate and then take a stand. Your thesis statement should directly answer the following questions:

What arguments are being made for and against multiculturalism in the classroom? Should ethnic studies be included in high school classrooms?

Guidelines:
Essay must be at least 4 pages, typed, and double spaced with 12 pt. Times New Roman font. Please staple
Introduction:
Introduce the reader to both sides of the debate and establish a reason for why this debate is important.
End your introduction with a thesis statement that clearly states your position.
Make sure your thesis statement includes why or why not.
Body:
Use the body to support your thesis statement.
Discuss multiple arguments from opponents and proponents of multiculturalism.
Must include textual evidence from Liu and Chavez readings.
Should also mention the documentary.
Conclusion
Remind a reader why this debate is important.
Make suggestions for high school classrooms based on your arguments.
