Evaluate the implications of racial depiction in modern popular culture.

A democratic nation, such as the United States, works to uphold an ideal society where all people are treated equally, regardless of race. However, popular media culture, driven as it is by profit, tends toward the reinforcement of existing, majority-driven norms. As a result, equal treatment or uniform depiction of race in popular culture may be subjective depending on your racial vantage point.

In this Discussion, you will assess the different perceptions of race by and through popular culture.

To prepare for this Discussion:

Review this week’s Learning Resources.

Your group will discuss TV/advertising.

Find one or two specific texts within the media type TV/ Advertising that demonstrate racial depiction in popular culture. (Remember that modern popular culture texts refers to movies, TV shows, pieces of music, books, magazines, etc. Also, modern popular culture references are not restricted to recent examples.)

Evaluate the implications of racial depiction in modern popular culture (through its texts).
With these thoughts in mind:

write a paragraph assessing the uniformity of depictions of race in modern popular culture. In a second paragraph, assess the ramifications of those depictions in modern popular culture. Support your assertions by making at least 2 references, in proper APA format, to your course readings.

Note: Each answer should include illustrations from one or two specific texts of the media type assigned to your Discussion Group. You may be writing about a text that others and/or your Instructor have not seen. Therefore, it is critical to back up your points with your examples and solid arguments; your writing will be gauged primarily on these merits.

Be sure to support your ideas by connecting them to this week’s Learning Resources or to something you have read, heard, seen, or experienced.
