Objective: Write a 3-4pg personal narrative about overcoming a difficulty, which you may define as you see fit. Choose something factual from your own life. Narrative and descriptive writing should be the focus of this essay, but you should also seek to make an argument of some kind. In other words, you are not simply telling a story for the sake of conveying a story; while entertaining your audience is one possible goal for this essay, you want to make sure you are making an ARGUMENT about something.
You may want to begin from two major starting points: 1) an idea or 2) an event/memory/incident. The more particular and original your idea the greater chance your essay will be successful (though thats not to say you cant write successfully on a common idea or event). In any case, write YOUR story, not someone elses or a clichd version of it. Give us your unique perspective. Allow your readers to relive your story.
Note on length: I wont accept anything less than 3pgs. Anything beyond that is permissible.

Suggestions: There are many ways to go about this assignment. You might focus on an INCIDENT/EVENT that caused some difficulty in your life but also allowed for personal growth or insight. Perhaps this event illustrates a certain IDEA or LESSON for youone that speaks to others. If you start with an ideathe struggle with being terribly short, for instanceyou want to find a story that paints and supports what youre trying to say. Whichever you choose, an idea or event, I recommend that you FOCUS on one thing. Having too many ideas or events will cloud your writing and weaken the structure and focus of the piece. This is still a relatively short essay, so find something youre passionate about and dig deep!
Writing Tools and Methods: First, youll want to incorporate the ideas and strategies weve discussed in class. Besides making an argument, there are two large writing objectives for this essay: NARRATIVE and DESCRIPTION. In other words, the essay should be a richly descriptive story with a point. Next, consider key narrative elements such as CHARACTER, DIALOGUE, SCENE, and SETTING. But remember, a story is more than a sequence of events. I want youthe writer and central characterto think about the events on the page. How are you making sense of the action? Last, the essay should be a mix of narrative and REFLECTION.
Evaluation: The success of your essay will be measured by how well you incorporate these concepts. Here are some large questions for consideration:
v How does my narrative begin? Does it effectively grab the reader?
v Whats the purpose for sharing my narrative? What can readers gain by reading it?
v Whats the deeper meaning behind the story?
v Who would be an ideal audience for the piece?
v Does the structure of my narrative easily flow and hold?
v Can my readers SEE my characters and EXPERIENCE whats going onor am I simply telling them what to see and how to feel?
v Does my level of description effectively communicate what Im trying to share?
v How do my reflections add to the experiences on the page? Have I crossed a line and gone into preaching to my readers?
